Engineering Mechanics (080104)

The Discipline of Engineering Mechanics in Hohai University is accommodated in the College of Mechanics and Materials. The Department of Engineering Mechanics is one of the five oldest departments of Hohai University. A founder of the department was the late professor Xu Zhilun, a renowned engineering educator in China and a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Science. The discipline was authorized to award the doctorate degree in 1998 and was classified as a class-A discipline by the State Council Committee of Academic Degrees in 1993. It was recognized as a key discipline of Jiangsu Province in 2001 and 2006, and a national key discipline in 2007. The discipline hosts a key laboratory of the Ministry of Water Conservancy for Engineering Mechanics and Structure Detection, a national educational laboratory center focused on mechanics, which is also the priority laboratory center of Jiangsu Province, and a post-doctoral research station in mechanics. Research in the Discipline of Engineering Mechanics at Hohai University is focused mainly on practical problems arising in large hydro-electric engineering, geotechnical engineering, and structural engineering. Special emphasis is placed on the physical principles underlying modern engineering design. The discipline has 45 academic staff including 26 professors. They are engaged in many research projects in the area of Failure Mechanism and Safety Assessment of High Dams, the Mechanical Property of Engineering Materials, Computational Mechanics and Engineering Simulation, Geomechanics, etc. In the last three years, the discipline has undertaken 2 research projects in the National Basic Research Program (973) funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, a priority research project and 12 general research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and many other research and consulting projects, The total research funding in three years has exceeded RMB35 million yuan.


Education aims:

The discipline aims at cultivating high-level personnel in mechanical theory and engineering applications. The students are expected with the following characters and abilities: the rigorous scientific attitude and style; the abilities in teaching, researching as well as management for engineering; the solid and broad mathematical and mechanical background and systematic engineering knowledge; the ability of reading academic research materials and writing academic papers and carrying out academic communications with foreign languages; the ability of establishing proper mechanical-mathematical models as well as applying advanced theoretical/experimental/computational methods for solving complex engineering problems.

Research directions:

Disaster and fracture mechanics; computational mechanics and virtual simulations; structure test and health detection and reinforcement for weak structures; the stability and optimization for engineering structures; structure dynamics and earthquake resistance engineering.

Education program:

Standard education program lasts for 3 years, it is no more than 5 years. The total minimum required credits is 18, including no less than 12 credits for degree courses, no less than 6 credits for non-degree courses. 


Civil Engineering Material (081420)

Civil engineering material is a sub-discipline develops on the basis of material science and civil engineering. The characteristics of this discipline are new materials for engineering, material endurance and new materials for structure repair. The research directions include concrete material, fiber and composite material, technique of material surface and geo-synthetics. The discipline have achieved great success in these above areas and won many national and provincial rewords. There are 20 teacher including a Double hired academician and 8 professors.

The students are expected with the following characters and abilities: the rigorous scientific attitude and style; the abilities in teaching, researching as well as management for engineering; the solid and broad mathematical and mechanical background and systematic engineering knowledge; the ability of reading academic research materials and writing academic papers and carrying out academic communications with foreign languages; the ability of carrying out detection, preparation and evaluation for civil engineering materials.

Research directions:

cement-based materials; functional civil engineering materials; technique of structure repair; material strengthen; engineering polymer material.

Standard education program lasts for 3 years, it is no more than 5 years. The total minimum required credits is 18, including no less than 12 credits for degree courses, no less than 6 credits.
